Bournemouth Santa's Grotto: Storytime £12.50, From 14 Nov

There are two different things people mean by “Santa in Bournemouth”, and they are at very different stages of being announced.

Santa in the town centre has changed format for 2026. Christmas in Bournemouth runs from Thursday 12 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, and Santa’s Workshop in the Lower Gardens now hosts booked 30-minute Storytime with Santa sessions, followed by a free story on the Square stage at 5.30pm. Last year’s weekend drop-in hours are no longer on the operator’s pages. The Santa trains at Swanage and Moors Valley have published their dates, and Swanage its prices.

Updated 20 October: Storytime with Santa is now on sale. A child ticket is £12.50 and an adult £6.50, plus booking fees, every child needs an adult ticket with them, and the first bookable session is Saturday 14 November at 10.45am.

Updated 10 October: the operator has republished its Santa pages for 2026. The weekend 12pm to 6pm drop-in hours have gone, replaced by booked Storytime with Santa sessions and a free 5.30pm story in the Square. Session prices are not yet on its pages.

Santa’s Workshop, Lower Gardens

The operator’s Santa’s Workshop page puts the workshop “right in the heart of Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens, beside Santa’s Express and overlooking the historic Bournemouth Bandstand”. Entry to the Festive Trail around it is free; the workshop itself is a booked session.

What the operator says about the sessions:

• Storytime with Santa runs “throughout the Christmas season”, and each session lasts 30 minutes.
• Santa “shares a festive story, surrounded by toys, presents and all the magic of his Alpine Workshop”, and the session is “designed for the whole family”.
• “Spaces are limited, so advance booking is recommended.”

Storytime with Santa prices

The sessions went on sale on the operator’s Beyonk booking shop, which we read on 20 October 2026:

• Every person attending needs a ticket, adults included, and a child ticket can only be booked alongside at least one adult ticket. A parent and one child pay £20.16 with fees.
• Santa reads “some of his favourite Christmas stories”, takes questions, and “you will have an opportunity to capture your own photo with Santa”. There is no professional photo package in the listing.
• Each session takes up to 40 people. The first bookable session is Saturday 14 November at 10.45am, two days after the site opens.
• The operator says morning slots are usually quieter, which may suit children who struggle with crowds. Only assistance dogs are allowed in.
• You can move a booking up to 48 hours ahead but not cancel it, and online booking closes an hour before each session.

What it does not yet say: which days Santa is in after the opening weekend, or the full session times for December. Last year it ran Bauble Decorating, Biscuit Decorating and Story Time classes on the same booking system, with transfers rather than refunds for cancellations made at least 48 hours ahead; the other bookable attractions there were the Christmas Tree Maze at £3.50 and Snow & Glow Mini Golf from £6.50, both excluding fees, when we checked on 6 September.

The free option: Santa on the Square stage, 5.30pm

The operator’s Santa visits page says that after the workshop sessions Santa makes “a special appearance on the stage in Bournemouth Square, right next to the Alpine Lodge”, at 5.30pm, to share a festive story. It is free.

Read the small print before promising a child a chat with him: the operator says this “is centred around a magical storytelling session with Santa, rather than a dedicated meet and greet”. For one-to-one time it points families to the booked workshop sessions. The page does not say which days the 5.30pm story runs.

Swanage Railway: the Father Christmas Yuletide Express

This is the one that is fully published, and the railway says tickets “sell fast”.

Twelve dates in 2026: 28 and 29 November, then 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 December.

Prices, which the railway states are “frozen at 2025 rates”:

• Standard seating: £29.95.
• Children on laps, under 2s only, including a Christmas gift: £14.95.
• Private family compartment for up to 6 people: £199.95.
• Relaxed Carriage, a quieter option: £29.95 and £14.95.

The ticket covers a one-hour return journey from Swanage through the Purbecks, a visit from Father Christmas at your seat, a gift for every child, and a candy cane and chocolate coins for everyone on board.

Practical points from the railway’s own terms:

• All services leave from Swanage Station, with council pay and display parking at BH19 1PW. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
• Prams and pushchairs cannot be carried on the Father Christmas trains.
• One wheelchair space per train. A disabled passenger may bring one carer free, booked online, with ID shown on collection.
• All bookings are final and no refunds are available. No other discounts apply.

For adults without children in tow, the railway also runs the Christmas Belle, a Pullman afternoon tea on the restored Devon Belle, on the same run of dates from 28 November.

Moors Valley Railway: Santa Specials

The miniature railway at Moors Valley Country Park, Horton Road, Ashley Heath, Ringwood BH24 2ET, runs its Santa Specials on seven dates: 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20 and 21 December 2026. Those are the only dates its booking calendar will accept.

The ticket includes free car parking for the day, the train from Lakeside to Kingsmere Station, the Winter Wonderland, a visit to Santa’s grotto, a present for adults as well as children, and mince pies, mulled wine, tea and coffee. The railway notes it stocks vegan, gluten free and lactose free options.

Every transaction carries a non-refundable £3.75 booking fee.

Departure times and prices only appear once you pick a date inside the booking system, so there is no published price list to quote. The railway’s phone number is 01425 471415.

Getting there and parking

For the Lower Gardens workshop, the closures and charges that matter are the town centre ones: see parking in Bournemouth for the 24-hour car parks and the evening rates, and Bournemouth roadworks and travel for anything live on the route in. The market itself is cashless, and its operator confirms it has no car park of its own.

Swanage and Moors Valley are both drives. Swanage means either the Sandbanks ferry or the long way round through Wareham, and the ferry queue on a December Saturday is the thing people underestimate.

What is still to come

• The full Storytime with Santa calendar. Prices are out (checked 20 October) and the first session is 14 November, but the operator has not listed which days Santa is in through December or when the last session is.
