Bournemouth Santa's Grotto: workshop times and train dates

There are two different things people mean by “Santa in Bournemouth”, and they are at very different stages of being announced.

Santa’s Workshop in the Lower Gardens has published its hours but not its season dates. The Santa trains at Swanage and Moors Valley have published their dates, and Swanage has published its prices, so those are the ones you can actually book today.

Santa’s Workshop, Lower Gardens

The workshop sits in the Lower Gardens, next to Santa’s Express and in front of the bandstand, as part of the free Christmas Tree Wonderland trail. Entry to the trail itself is free.

The operator’s own Santa visits page gives the hours:

• Every Saturday and Sunday, 12pm to 6pm, through the festive season.
• Every day from 22 to 24 December.
• On 24 December Santa “will exclusively appear at his ‘Tales with Santa’ classes only”. If you are planning a Christmas Eve visit, that is a booked class, not a drop-in.

Santa starts each session at the workshop and then works his way through the rest of the site, so the workshop is where to be if you want the meeting rather than a glimpse.

The bookable sessions, and what they cost

Three Santa’s Workshop sessions are loaded on the operator’s booking system: Bauble Decorating, Biscuit Decorating and Story Time with Santa, billed as “Christmas Tales with Santa”. Cancellations at least 48 hours ahead get a transfer to another session rather than a refund.

None of the three carried a published price when we checked on 6 September 2026. The other attractions on the same system do: the Christmas Tree Maze is £3.50 excluding fees, and Snow & Glow Mini Golf starts at £6.50 excluding fees. Treat the workshop classes as priced but not yet published.

The bit to be careful about

The operator’s Santa’s Workshop page still describes it as “the brand new Santa’s Workshop for 2025”, and the Christmas in Bournemouth home page is still asking people to sign up to “be the first to hear our 2026 dates (coming soon)”.

So the hours above are the operator’s current published hours, but the season they sit inside has not been dated for 2026. In 2025 the site ran from mid-November to early January. Our Christmas market and Tree Wonderland page covers the rest of the site and will carry the dates when they land.

Swanage Railway: the Father Christmas Yuletide Express

This is the one that is fully published, and the railway says tickets “sell fast”.

Twelve dates in 2026: 28 and 29 November, then 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 December.

Prices, which the railway states are “frozen at 2025 rates”:

• Standard seating: £29.95.
• Children on laps, under 2s only, including a Christmas gift: £14.95.
• Private family compartment for up to 6 people: £199.95.
• Relaxed Carriage, a quieter option: £29.95 and £14.95.

The ticket covers a one-hour return journey from Swanage through the Purbecks, a visit from Father Christmas at your seat, a gift for every child, and a candy cane and chocolate coins for everyone on board.

Practical points from the railway’s own terms:

• All services leave from Swanage Station, with council pay and display parking at BH19 1PW. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
• Prams and pushchairs cannot be carried on the Father Christmas trains.
• One wheelchair space per train. A disabled passenger may bring one carer free, booked online, with ID shown on collection.
• All bookings are final and no refunds are available. No other discounts apply.

For adults without children in tow, the railway also runs the Christmas Belle, a Pullman afternoon tea on the restored Devon Belle, on the same run of dates from 28 November.

Moors Valley Railway: Santa Specials

The miniature railway at Moors Valley Country Park, Horton Road, Ashley Heath, Ringwood BH24 2ET, runs its Santa Specials on seven dates: 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20 and 21 December 2026. Those are the only dates its booking calendar will accept.

The ticket includes free car parking for the day, the train from Lakeside to Kingsmere Station, the Winter Wonderland, a visit to Santa’s grotto, a present for adults as well as children, and mince pies, mulled wine, tea and coffee. The railway notes it stocks vegan, gluten free and lactose free options.

Every transaction carries a non-refundable £3.75 booking fee.

Departure times and prices only appear once you pick a date inside the booking system, so there is no published price list to quote. The railway’s phone number is 01425 471415.

Getting there and parking

For the Lower Gardens workshop, the closures and charges that matter are the town centre ones: see parking in Bournemouth for the 24-hour car parks and the evening rates, and Bournemouth roadworks and travel for anything live on the route in. The market itself is cashless, and its operator confirms it has no car park of its own.

Swanage and Moors Valley are both drives. Swanage means either the Sandbanks ferry or the long way round through Wareham, and the ferry queue on a December Saturday is the thing people underestimate.

What is still to come

• The 2026 season dates for Christmas in Bournemouth, including when Santa’s Workshop opens and closes. The operator says “coming soon”; on last year’s timing expect them in September or October.
